Can I get a visa if I buy a business in the UK?

UK Expansion FAQ NoShort answer

No. Buying a UK business, or setting one up, does not give you a visa or the right to work in the UK. Immigration depends on the route you qualify for, not the money you invest.

For overseas companies, the usual route is the UK Expansion Worker visa. It lets an existing senior manager or specialist employee come to the UK to set up the company's first UK branch or subsidiary. Plan the immigration route before you commit to the purchase or the move.

Can you invest your way into a UK visa?

Not any more. The UK closed its investor visa, which was based on money alone, in 2022. Buying shares in a UK company, buying a whole business or putting money into a new one does not qualify you for a visa on its own.

What is the UK Expansion Worker visa?

It lets an overseas business send a senior manager or specialist employee to the UK to set up its first UK branch or subsidiary. The employee must already work for the overseas business, and the UK operation must not have started trading yet. Up to five workers can be sponsored, for up to two years.

What does the company need before staff can apply?

A sponsor licence from the Home Office, the UK government department responsible for immigration. The Home Office checks that the overseas business is genuine and trading, that the UK expansion plan is credible, and that the role is a real senior or specialist position. The licence comes first, so build it into your timetable.

What happens once the UK business is trading?

The company can add longer-term routes to its licence, such as the Skilled Worker or Senior or Specialist Worker routes, and move staff onto them. This matters because time on the Expansion Worker route does not count towards settling in the UK permanently, while the Skilled Worker route can.

Is there a route for founders?

There is a separate route for founders of new, innovative businesses, but it needs endorsement from an approved body and suits a new idea, not the purchase of an existing business. If you are an owner rather than an employee, take immigration advice early, before you buy anything.
